If I’ve learned one thing after years of monastic life, it’s that our Creator’s distance and silence are equally as beautiful attributes as its presence and consolation. Learning to embrace all these attributes with gratitude comprises a large part of my spiritual journey. I have found invaluable inspiration from the writings of the 20th century philosopher and mystic, Simone Weil, especially in the publication, Waiting for God. The title of the “Theotokos” (Mary as “God-Bearer”) is particularly meaningful to me in that, although we may often find the Creator silent and distant, we can perhaps play a role in divine incarnation and presence as “God-Bearers” here and now.
